           AGUSTARELLO AFFRE - TENOR

Autographed postcard photograph as Belmonte with Jeanne Lindsay as Costanza in the French version of Mozart’s “Die Entführung aus dem Serail, 1903.  The occasion was Lindsay’s Paris Opera debut.

Affre (1858-1931) was known throughout the French opera world as “The French Tamagno” a tribute to his clarion-like voice.  He studied in Toulouse and Paris, his most important teacher was the bass, Pedro Gaillard who was also Director of the Opera.  He sung for several years in French Provincial houses and then came to the Paris Opera in 1890, where he made his debut with Nellie Melba, who was making her stage debut in “Lucia di Lammermoor.”  Affre sung leading dramatic tenor roles at the Opera for the next 20 years.  He guested in London and in Brussels.  In 1911, he came to America where he sung in New Orleans, the Tivoli in San Francisco and toured Cuba.  He became the Director of the New Orleans Opera in 1913 and remained there until 1919 when the house burnt to the ground.  Affre spent his retirement in France.  His records give an indication of a truly spectacular clarion voice.

A touch of silvering to bottom left, else mint.
